Three Mistakes All Leaders Make

  1. Mistaking busyness for impact. Many leaders, including myself in the past, equate being constantly busy with being effective. This couldn't be further from the truth. But back-to-back meetings, late nights and constant firefighting often signal a lack of clarity, a lack of prioritisation and actually equate to low performance output. Real impact comes from focused energy, clear priorities and space to think. Getting into that flow state! See my recent article on "I don't have time" - Boll*cks don't you!

  2. Believing They Should “Have It All Together”. I've seen many leaders, particularly senior leaders and execs, who believe that asking for help undermines their credibility. I was definitely one of these people, and goodness, it held me back on reflection! It's probably one of my biggest regrets: not showing that I needed help more and asking for it. They mask uncertainty, avoid vulnerability and keep pushing through anyway, not realising that it's actually holding them back. Strength isn’t found in pretending; it’s found in self-awareness, reflection and the courage to grow.

  3. Ignoring the Signals Until It’s Too Late. The sense of knowing you're tired, knowing that you're finding things frustrating and probably overreacting to feedback from your colleagues, peers and your boss. That low-level sense of “something’s off.” Most leaders feel it but push it aside in favour of "productivity", without realising the damage they're doing to themselves, their teams and those colleagues around them. The problem is that what you ignore doesn’t disappear; it just compounds the issues. Burnout doesn’t hit all at once; it creeps in while you're too busy to notice.

Leadership isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing what matters. This speaks to where you're right now, and you're ready to lead with greater clarity, purpose and balance.
